A Civil War carte-de-visite and materials pertaining to World War I home front efforts in Madison, Wisconsin kept by the Butler family of Christiana and Madison. A program of ceremonies concerns the mobilization of Madison Boy Scouts for presentation of medals and launching of the Second Liberty Loan campaign. Two subscriber certificates, graphically-appealing in color with patriotic themes, attest to the purchase of Third and Fourth Liberty Loans with Henry Butler's name featured prominently on one of the certificates. Issued by the Dane County Council of Defense, a pledge card to be a "Junior Soldier" for the defense of country was completed by Henry R. Butler of Lincoln School. Butler promised to "rebuke" negative statements coming from his schoolmates about the United States or the war effort. He also promised to eat food placed before him without finding fault and not take more food than needed. The carte-de-visite is of Richard Butler in his Civil War uniform. Butler served in Company D of the 29th Wisconsin Infantry and in the 54th Regiment of the U.S. Colored Infantry.
